Who Are You Thinking Of Now?

© Anne Sumner 2011

Travelling for years
I have found myself here
On your island of beauty
Leaving my pain on the shore
Passing smiles
Unexpectedly open
An offer of comfort
- feels like we’ve been here before
I was looking for you
Before I even knew why
You were ready and waiting
To give me the one thing I craved
Softly and sweetly
Just tearing my ugly away

“Is there something you’re thinking about?”
He suggested
And there it began
Took my head in his hands
And released me from all
I’d rejected within
He said “who are you thinking of now?”
And he knew I was fighting back tears
Held me and cursed me for years
To think only of him

Sweet summer rains
And the waves in the moonlight
Cloud overhead
A shadow that crosses your face
Distant crisis
Loathe to return to this city of violence
- how will I know you’re OK?
And how long can hold on to this
If you’re thousands of miles away?
I can only feel grateful that you were here
When I needed a friend
I will never forget

“Is there something you’re thinking about?”
He suggested
And there it began
Took my head in his hands
And released me from all
I’d rejected within
He said “who are you thinking of now?”
And he knew I was fighting back tears
Held me and cursed me for years
To think only of him

He said “who are you thinking of now?”
And he knew I was fighting back tears
Held me and cursed me for years
To think only of him
