Little Lost Souls
© Anne Sumner 2014
Thought that love was like water, sitting low
Filling the space, 'til it overflowed
Back to the river from where it came
From my heart to yours and back again
And all the things you said we'd stand to lose
Doesn't make it any easier getting over you
And we're so far from where we began
Where the lights are guiding us in
Don't you think we all could use a chance to set the record straight
And these little lost souls will find their way home some day
You were my lifeline, though I'm not sure how
And nobody knew how you helped me out
And I never told you how much I cared
You never realised you were all I had
And in the end it wasn't even clear
How I could make my way without you here
And we're so far from where we began
Where the lights are guiding us in
Don't you think we all could use a chance to set the record straight
And these little lost souls will find their way home some day
If time is moving us on from where we started
Can I accept what is gone, and not be brokenhearted?
We're never truly alone, and I know
I'll hold my memory of you, and what we came here to do
I'll follow your footsteps where they go
It's backs to the wall when it's hope against hope
And I'll always cherish the things we said
Will you remember in the years ahead?
It doesn't last, you said, it fades away
And no two loves are ever quite the same
