Holding You Is Everything
© Anne Sumner 2021
I go out and I walk the path that was laid for me
And sometimes it’s dark before I get home
And you ask how it was, and it’s no use explaining it
What would you say if you’d known?
So I’m kicking my shoes off and dumping my bags
And I’m wearily hanging my coat on the floor
And I’m looking at you like my day has gone backwards
And you’re taking me in when I can’t take any more
So when the rain starts to fall, and it’s cold outside
And it’s dark down the hall light the fire, light the fire
I wish I was brave enough not to need it but
Holding you is everything I ever left to find
Well you think that I’ve been out on adventures
Enchanted by sunsets and admiring the view
I’ve been falling off mountains and running from dragons
And sleeping in ditches, and dreaming of you
So when the rain starts to fall, and it’s cold outside
And it’s dark down the hall light the fire, light the fire
I wish I was brave enough not to need it but
Holding you is everything I ever left to find
So when push comes to shove, and I’ve been where I can go
And I’m running on empty and I’m all out of clues
Well there’s no kind of love like a light in the window
And the sound of your heartbeat as I’m wrapped up in you
So when the rain starts to fall, and it’s cold outside
And it’s dark down the hall light the fire, light the fire
I wish I was brave enough not to need it but
Holding you is everything I ever left to find
Holding you is everything I ever left to find
